The Designer is divided into several tabs, splitting up the design of a form by component.

The visual side of a design is in the Design tab. This is where you will spend most of your time.

The Design Tab

Under Design is 4 sub-tabs:

  • Preview
  • Controls
  • Blocks
  • View

These are part of the View designer. Notice that the Design tab is always selected as you switch between Preview, Controls, Blocks, View. You will spend most of your time in the Controls tab.

Controls

A control is the smallest unit of an eForm.

Controls fall into one of the above categories:

  • Action: Controls that trigger activity. Currently this is limited to the Action Button and Save Button.
  • Attachment: Controls related to attached documents and linked eForms.
  • Info: Controls that provide inline documentation to users.
  • Input: Data entry controls
  • Navigation: Controls that trigger the browser to move to a new different page
  • Reporting: Charts, graphs and tables
  • Visual: Titles, labels, rich labels, images

The power of the eForm comes mostly from Input controls. These controls allow data capture, that can then trigger activity and be reported from.

To insert a control: click first where you want the control to go

Select the control and you will see its properties down the left side of the screen.

Each of these is configurable. Many can also have formulas bound to them, meaning that they can be controlled intelligently according to whatever rules you want to put in place.

You can also click the Preview tab to see your design in action.

Preview

This tab lets you see what a form will look like live. All controls are functional, formulas are running, and live data is being retrieved for references.

Blocks

A block is an area of a form that can contain controls. Blocks have their own properties that can be configured. They can also be dragged around the form to change the order of an eForm. Blocks can be used for many different purposes, commonly: To group related information, to group controls relevant to a particular workflow step, or to separate out controls that need special permissions to access. Blocks can be made invisible or collapse according to formulas.
